As a vegan I stand against everything the humanity does to animals for food, but lab meat might be different and I would consider going back to meat as long as it's lab grown. Do you think I'm right about this, or is there an aspect I'm not seeing?

This is a valid perspective and a nuanced discussion but something I think is worth having!
I think you'd agree that the core of many vegan philosophies is the avoidance of animal harm, and if lab-grown meat can genuinely eliminate that, then it seems like a perfectly logical conclusion to consider it.
The whole point of this tech is to give people an ethical alternative, but you're also right to ask since it's still highly debatable if producing lab-grown meat is really cruelty-free.
You might want to read about one of the early methods where they rely on Fetal Bovine Serum for cell growth, which I think might be a deal-breaker for you.
However, it's important to note that there are a lot of companies now that are using serum-free media, and that's the direction the whole industry is moving in.
So it's more about knowing which brands are truly aligned with your values.
I suggest you keep an eye on the biotech side of things and you'll find the answers you're looking for!

You're not wrong, lab grown meat avoids harming animals, which aligns with vegan ethics. Just keep in mind some products still use animal derived growth factors or have environmental impacts, so it's not completely impact free.

The only caveats are things like how it's produced (some use animal derived growth factors) and the environmental footprint, but from a pure animal welfare standpoint, it's a reasonable compromise.

You’re not wrong to see lab-grown meat as a potential ethical middle ground. The key questions are scalability, energy footprint and whether it fully eliminates animal-derived inputs in production. It’s promising but still developing.
